Empowering Young Female Athletes at Saint Mary’s Athletic Center
Saint Mary’s Athletic Center welcomed numerous female athletes from the local community for the College’s National Girls and Women in Sports Day Clinic. This event aimed to inspire and educate young girls about the various opportunities available in sports.
Hands-On Experience with Varsity Sports
During the clinic, aspiring athletes had the unique chance to select four out of the nine varsity women’s sports offered by the college, providing them with invaluable learning experiences from both student-athletes and coaches.
Inspiring the Next Generation
Jackie Bauters, the head coach of the cross country team, highlighted the importance of such events in helping young athletes discover their passion for sports. “This evening offers a wonderful chance for girls to explore sports they might not otherwise consider due to age or intimidation. They get a taste of the excitement and possibly find something they want to pursue further,” Bauters noted.
The Value of Diverse Athletic Training
Valentina Rubio, a senior lacrosse player, emphasized the benefits of training in various sports. She believes such diversity can enrich an athlete’s skill set. “Participating in multiple sports allows you to gain insights and techniques that you can apply to your favorite sport. This approach fosters a well-rounded player, which is something we encourage among young girls, hoping they continue this path through high school and college,” Rubio explained.
Building a Strong Community
Erin Monnier, a sophomore stunt athlete, expressed how vital it is to support younger female athletes. As part of a newly introduced sport at Saint Mary’s that blends elements of cheerleading, Monnier remarked, “Empowering girls in today’s world is crucial. Women need to unite and remain resilient because our strength is often underestimated. We can achieve anything we set our minds to.”
Upcoming Opportunities for Young Female Athletes
For those who missed the clinic, Saint Mary’s will be hosting a sports exploration camp for young female athletes in June, providing another opportunity to engage in sports and mentorship.
