Commemorating the International Day of Women and Girls in Science
Every February 11, nations worldwide observe the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. This occasion aims to promote equal access to opportunities for women and girls within the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
The Origins of the Celebration
The establishment of this dedicated day arose from a resolution adopted by the General Assembly on December 22, 2015. The decision aligns with global efforts to highlight the crucial contributions made by women and girls in scientific fields.
The primary goal is to ensure full and equal participation for women in science, as gender equality remains a significant focus for UNESCO. By empowering young girls through education and providing them a platform to express their ideas, we can foster development and promote peace.
This day serves not only to encourage girls to engage in scientific careers but also to recognize the historical achievements of women in science.
The Theme for 2025
Each year, a specific theme is established to address critical issues surrounding gender equality in STEM. For 2025, the theme is set as “Unpacking STEM Careers: Her Voice in Science.” This year marks the 10th anniversary of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.
To celebrate this milestone, UNESCO will host a special event featuring inspiring narratives from diverse speakers, emphasizing the value of diversity in STEM. It will showcase how varied perspectives, especially from women, contribute to innovation and highlight the opportunities within STEM careers.
The festivities at UNESCO headquarters will include a documentary screening titled Women of Science: These Women Who Change Our Lives, directed by Safia Kessas. This film presents the extraordinary stories of six women scientists from Europe, detailing their notable contributions and the challenges they faced.
