Advancing Gender Equality in Science: A Future for Women and Girls

In 2025, we will celebrate the 10th anniversary of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science (IDWGS) alongside the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. These milestones underscore the global commitment to enhancing gender equality and empowering women.

Despite the progress made, women and girls still encounter systemic obstacles in the pursuit of careers in science. Addressing the gender gap in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) is essential for building a future that benefits everyone.

To truly close the gender gap, we must dismantle stereotypes, elevate role models to inspire young girls, implement targeted support programs for women’s advancement, and cultivate inclusive workplace policies that foster diversity and equity.

Highlighting Women in STEM: Her Voice Matters

Event Date: 11 February 2025
Venue: UNESCO Headquarters, Paris, France
Format: Hybrid event
This hybrid event will connect Member States, public and private sector stakeholders, journalists, and students, celebrating the contributions of women to global scientific endeavors while reflecting on the expansive impact of science.

Contextual Overview

The persistent gender gap in STEM disciplines continues to hinder progress, with women still under-represented across various scientific fields. Although strides have been made in increasing female participation in higher education, challenges remain in securing equitable representation in STEM professions.

The United Nations has long recognized gender equality as a foundational issue. Empowering women and girls is crucial not only for advancing economic development but also for achieving all goals outlined in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

In a resolution adopted on 20 December 2013, the General Assembly emphasized the necessity of ensuring full and equal participation of women and girls of all ages in science, technology, and innovation. This participation is vital to fostering gender equality and empowering women across the globe.
