Inspiring Future Innovators: Women in Science Outreach
Promoting Science Among Youth
In an effort to celebrate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science on February 11, 2022, a dedicated group of female scientists embarked on an inspiring initiative aimed at shaping young minds. Over the course of several days, these ambassadors from prominent scientific institutions visited schools in the local area, showcasing the importance of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields.
Event Overview
From February 7 to 11, approximately sixty volunteer scientists and engineers representing CERN, Scienscope (UNIGE), the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), and the Annecy Particle Physics Laboratory (LAPP) engaged with more than a hundred classrooms. Their outreach efforts reached about 2,680 students, inspiring them to explore potential career paths in STEM.
A Transformative Experience
The primary objective of these classroom presentations was to reshape perceptions regarding careers in scientific and technical domains. The engaging talks became a catalyst for many children—both girls and boys—to contemplate future professions in these critical fields.
Despite the ongoing global challenges, these in-person visits adhered to a stringent health and safety protocol established by CERN, ensuring a safe environment for both students and volunteers. Some presentations were postponed and are set to take place when health conditions permit.
Successful Outreach and Future Opportunities
Marking its sixth consecutive year, the Women and Girls in Science and Technology program has been a resounding success. Since its inception in 2017, it has reached over 13,000 pupils aged 7 to 15 in the local region, igniting interest in various STEM careers through passionate sharing of knowledge from female ambassadors.
