The Legacy of Three Generations at Brooke Hills Playhouse
Brooke Hills Playhouse, a cherished cultural institution in Wellsburg, has been shaped by the passion and dedication of three generations of women: Diana Mendel, her daughter Julie Mendel Barnhart, and granddaughter Chelsey. Their deep-rooted involvement in the arts reflects a compelling family legacy intertwined with the community.
A Family Affair
Diana Mendel’s journey with Brooke Hills Playhouse began nearly 42 years ago, when she first auditioned for a leading role in “Solid Gold Cadillac” in 1983. This moment marked the beginning of a lifelong commitment to theatre, during which she has acted, directed, and written numerous productions.
Following in her mother’s footsteps, Julie became a significant creative force in the playhouse, directing children’s shows for two decades. Her work was not only rewarding but also instrumental in fostering a love for the arts in young participants.
The baton of leadership has now passed to Chelsey, who has embraced her mother’s and grandmother’s roles with a dedication to continue their legacy.
The Heart of the Community
For the three women, Brooke Hills Playhouse has been more than a venue for performances; it has served as a nurturing environment for creativity and self-expression. Chelsey emphasized the importance of the playhouse as a welcoming space for everyone, whether they are acting, volunteering, or watching a show.
“It is a place where people come and feel welcomed,” Chelsey stated. “Many of us have grown up here and found our identities.”
Honoring a Legacy
The recent loss of Julie Mendel Barnhart in December 2022 due to liver disease marks a poignant chapter in this familial narrative. Chelsey reflected on her mother’s strength and dedication to family, stating, “She was the strongest person I have ever known.”
Despite the challenges faced, Diana and Chelsey aim to honor Julie by ensuring that the playhouse continues to thrive. “We hope to see many of Julie’s former young actors audition for ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’ to honor her,” Diana remarked.
