L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Program Continues to Empower Female Scientists
Program Endorsement and Impact
H.E. Sarah Al Amiri, the UAE Minister of State for Public Education and Advanced Technology, has endorsed the L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Program for the sixth consecutive year. Al Amiri, who also chairs the UAE Space Agency, commended the initiative for its significant role in empowering women researchers across various scientific fields.
In her remarks, Al Amiri highlighted the program’s contribution to fostering leadership and innovation within science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), emphasizing the crucial role women play in these areas.
Celebrating Contributions of Female Scientists
Al Amiri congratulated the program’s laureates for their outstanding contributions to advancing scientific knowledge in their communities. She noted that the initiative serves as an annual platform to celebrate female scientists in core disciplines, reinforcing the inspirational impact of women as essential partners in scientific advancement.
Laurent Duffier, Managing Director of L’Oreal Middle East, expressed the company’s commitment to enhancing diversity in STEM fields. He stated, “At L’Oréal, we believe that innovation thrives when diverse voices are included. However, the stark underrepresentation of women in STEM remains a global challenge. Through the L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Program, we are committed to breaking down barriers and empowering women scientists to reach their full potential.”
Advancing National Capabilities
Prof. Ebrahim Al Hajri, President of Khalifa University of Science and Technology, pointed out the importance of empowering women scientists in the UAE to drive national innovation. He stated, “The L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science program plays a crucial role in highlighting and elevating the exceptional contributions of female scientists.”
He further emphasized that investing in female talent not only advances scientific knowledge but also strengthens the UAE’s commitment to fostering a dynamic and diverse research environment.
Program Achievements and Ongoing Challenges
Since its introduction in the Middle East, the program has honored 57 female researchers, providing essential funding and recognition that empower them to fulfill their scientific ambitions. Despite these efforts, women remain significantly underrepresented in STEM fields, comprising merely 29.2% of the workforce globally, according to the World Economic Forum.
Furthermore, studies indicate that women in STEM often face pay disparities and obstacles to career advancement compared to their male counterparts. These challenges underline the necessity for ongoing support through initiatives such as the L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Program.
Future Orientation and Commitment to Diversity
The L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Program is dedicated to dismantling barriers for women in STEM, equipping them with the necessary tools and visibility to thrive. Guided by the motto, “The world needs science, and science needs women,” the program continues to advocate for gender diversity within scientific disciplines.
