Women Leading Innovation: A Look at Bulgaria’s Progress
During a recent roundtable discussion titled Women in Innovation, held in Sofia, Diana Miteva, Chair of the Board of the Bulgarian Ladies Forum, emphasized Bulgaria’s notable achievements in terms of women’s involvement in science and technology. The event featured Ekaterina Zaharieva, the European Commissioner for Startups, Research, and Innovation, as a special guest.
Significant Participation in Science
Miteva pointed out that, according to the latest statistics from the European Commission, women account for 49% of engineers and scientists in Bulgaria. This figure rises to 55% within academic circles, positioning Bulgaria among the top contenders in the European Union regarding gender representation in scientific fields. “Women scientists here don’t just participate in research; they drive science forward,” Miteva noted.
Women in Technology
The technology sector also benefits from female contributions, with women making up 27% of IT professionals in Bulgaria. This statistic places Bulgaria in the third position across the European Union, reinforcing Miteva’s assertion that “talent knows no gender” in the nation.
Entrepreneurship and Gender Balance
When discussing entrepreneurship, Miteva highlighted a growing trend of women taking the initiative to start their businesses. Data sourced from the Sofia Municipal Privatization and Investment Agency reveal that 25% of newly established companies in Bulgaria are founded or co-founded by women, surpassing the EU average in this regard. “We are proud that Bulgaria has a higher share of women entrepreneurs than the European average, because they have the courage to do it,” added Miteva.
Conclusion
The roundtable discussion underscored Bulgaria’s leading role in promoting gender equality within technical and entrepreneurial sectors. With a high percentage of female participation in both science and business, Bulgaria sets a strong example of how gender balance can foster innovation and drive progress.
