Women’s Fund of Greater Cincinnati Foundation is celebrating 30 years.

Women’s Fund of Greater Cincinnati Foundation has marked three decades of impactful service in the region, focusing on empowering women and girls through various funding initiatives.

Editorial Standards ⓘ

In 1995, a small group of dedicated women initiated a conversation about the disparity in funding for women and girls in Cincinnati. Leslie McNeil became an early advocate, contributing $5,300 to launch what would evolve into a significant foundation tailored to address these inequalities. Over the years, this initiative transitioned from merely providing financial support to becoming a research-driven organization dedicated to systemic change.

Evolution of the Organization

By 2005, the organization’s focus had shifted to data-backed research aimed at understanding the specific needs of women and girls in the Greater Cincinnati area. This led to the creation of the Pulse Report, which examines key areas affecting women, including economic security, education, health, personal safety, and leadership opportunities.

Extensive Reach and Partnerships

The Foundation’s influence extends across eight counties in Ohio, including parts of Northern Kentucky and Indiana. It actively collaborates with various community organizations, providing vital research and funding to address issues directly affecting women and girls.

Challenges and Initiatives

Despite progress over the past 30 years, many challenges remain. Issues such as economic disparity and representation on civic boards continue to persist. Currently, women hold less than 30% of positions on local civic boards, despite constituting more than half of the population. The Foundation aims to address this imbalance through initiatives like the “Appointed” program, which encourages women to seek positions on decision-making boards.

Upcoming Celebration

To commemorate its 30th anniversary, the Women’s Fund will host a celebratory luncheon on September 4th at Anderson Pavilion, starting at 11:30 AM. This event will not only honor the legacy of early advocates but will also recognize contemporary trailblazers who have significantly contributed to advancing women’s causes in the region. Notable honorees include Leslie McNeil herself, Mary Stagaman, Angela Blackshear Brown, and Barbara Turner.

Community Involvement and Support

Support from local sponsors remains crucial for the organization’s ongoing mission. Contributions come in various forms, from ticket sales to sponsorships, and are integral to sustaining its research and advocacy efforts. As a nonprofit, the Women’s Fund strives to keep its resources accessible, offering free materials such as the self-sufficiency simulator and employer toolkits aimed at promoting equitable employment practices.

Accessing Resources

For those interested in learning more about the initiatives of the Women’s Fund, comprehensive resources are available on their website, including the Pulse Report and other key research findings. Community members are encouraged to engage with the Foundation, whether by attending events, donating, or simply spreading awareness.

The Women’s Fund continues to strive for greater equity and justice for women and girls in Greater Cincinnati — a goal that remains vital as the landscape continues to evolve.
