Wesleyan Women’s Ice Hockey Secures First Win of the Season
MIDDLETOWN, CT. – The Wesleyan women’s ice hockey team celebrated their inaugural victory of the season on Saturday, overcoming a five-game losing streak. They triumphed over Williams College, ending the match in a 2-2 tie, and ultimately prevailing 2-0 in the shootout.
Key Game Highlights
The game got off to a slow start without any scores in the first period. The Cardinals (0-5-1 overall), despite a strong offensive push from Dylan Green ’26, who recorded seven shots, were initially outmatched. Williams College (2-1-2 overall) gained momentum, taking a 2-0 lead midway through the second period thanks to goals from Zoe Rosenberg and Keira Harder.
However, Wesleyan did not back down. With five minutes left in the second period, Caroline Kee ’26 scored, bringing the game to a 2-1 scoreline. Two minutes later, Parker Caldara ’29 capitalized on a power play, leveling the score at 2-2 with assists from Green and Caroline Humber ’29.
Overtime and Shootout Success
Wesleyan’s goaltender, Sami Smith ’27, faced more than 20 shots in the third period but retained her poise, keeping the game tied and pushing it into overtime. The Cardinals outshot the Ephs during the five-minute extra period, but the score remained unchanged, leading to a shootout.
In the shootout, Green and Sam Galanek ’26 successfully converted their shots, while Smith made two key saves, ensuring the Cardinals’ victory.
Defensive Contributions
Defensively, Beats Tura ’26 and Aimee Seppenwolde ’26 were standout players, with Tura blocking five shots and contributing two of her own. Seppenwolde also showcased her skill with five shots and two blocks. In the face-off circle, Lilly Place ’29 won 11 draws, further aiding her team’s efforts.
Player Recognitions
In her impressive performance, Smith recorded 47 saves, matching her career-high, while Williams’ goalie Erin Pye made 29 saves.
