CAA Women’s Basketball Highlights from February 21
Delaware achieved an impressive sixth consecutive victory, while three other teams maintained their commendable form during a competitive conference night!
N.C. A&T 67, William & Mary 44
N.C. A&T (15-19, 11-2) showcased an exceptional defensive performance, dominating William & Mary (10-14, 7-6) with a 67-44 win.
The Aggies shot 47.4% from the field and built a significant 25-point lead entering the final quarter. Aija James led the scoring with 13 points, nearly doubling her season average of 7.3. The Aggies’ defense forced the Tribe into 18 turnovers, limiting their shooting to just 15 successful baskets out of 61 attempts. This was the second-lowest points allowed by A&T in a conference match this season, the lowest since January 26 against Hofstra. Monet Dance contributed a notable 11 points for William & Mary.
Drexel 60, Campbell 54
Drexel (14-9, 10-3) capitalized on a dominant third quarter, edging out Campbell (15-10, 8-5) with a score of 60-54.
After leading by four points at halftime, Drexel expanded its lead with a 19-11 score in the third quarter. Cara McCormack shone, hitting 3 of 3 from the field, including two 3-pointers, contributing 8 of the team’s 19 points in that period. The defense was relentless, holding Campbell to a mere .176 shooting percentage from the floor and just 2 baskets on 7 deep attempts. In a pivotal stretch, Drexel kept Campbell to just 1 make in 12 attempts over five minutes. McCormack finished with a career-high 23 points, while Olivia Tucker netted 11 points for the Camels.
Towson 67, Northeastern 51
Towson (9-16, 7-7) established a solid grip on the game with an 8-0 run to start the fourth quarter, defeating Northeastern (2-21, 1-13) 67-51, marking their third consecutive victory.
The matchup remained competitive through the first three quarters, with Towson holding a narrow 43-39 lead. The fourth quarter ignited with India Johnston stealing the show, starting the scoring after a Huskies turnover, followed by a three-pointer from Shariah Baynes. Semaya Turner capped the initial run before Alyssa Staten broke Northeastern’s scoring drought. Johnston ended the game with a team-high of 21 points, while Staten led the Huskies with 15 points.
Delaware 60, Elon 51
Delaware (10-14, 7-7) wrapped up the third quarter with a 7-0 run, overcoming Elon (13-11, 7-6) with a 60-51 score, thus extending their winning streak to six.
The game was tied at 39 with just under two minutes left in the third when the Blue Hens took charge. Chloe Wilson initiated the drive with a jumper, quickly followed by a block and a 3-pointer from Rebecca Demeke. Ella Wanzer sealed the quarter with a layup, sending Delaware into the final quarter with a 46-39 advantage. The Blue Hens secured their seventh conference victory of the season, powered by Wilson’s team-high 15 points, while Iycez Adams and Raven Preston each contributed 11 points for Elon.
