Southern Illinois Triumphs Over Murray State in MVC Opener

MURRAY, Ky. – In an impressive display of skill, the Southern Illinois volleyball team secured a 3-1 victory against Murray State to kick off their Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) campaign. This victory marks a significant milestone as it represents the first MVC win under Head Coach Brittany Harry, bringing their overall record to 6-7 for the season.

Match Overview

The Salukis demonstrated their prowess right from the start, showcasing strength and control, particularly in their serving game. Coach Harry noted the team’s dominance, particularly with nine service aces during the match. “Overall, I thought we were in control of the tempo most of the night,” Harry commented. “We were really good behind the service line, but I honestly think we can be a little more aggressive behind the service line and take some bigger risks.”

Key Performers

Cecilia Bulmahn stood out with a career-high 20 kills, turning the tide in pivotal moments, especially in the first set where she executed three kills and two aces during a critical 10-3 closing run. Kelly Franklin also delivered a stellar performance, matching her season-high with 16 kills and achieving an impressive .522 hitting percentage.

Defensive Highlights

On the defensive front, Eva Krakowski made her mark with an exceptional performance, recording 11 blocks, including seven in the decisive fourth set, contributing significantly to Southern’s victory.

Set Summary

  • Set One: Murray State initially led 20-15, but Bulmahn’s efforts helped Southern Illinois to a 25-23 win.
  • Set Two: Southern’s offense surged, stretching their lead to as much as 12 and winning the set 25-13.
  • Set Three: Despite Southern leading 24-22, Murray State rallied to win 27-25, extending the match.
  • Set Four: Southern clinched the match 25-19, propelled by Krakowski’s formidable defense.

Looking Ahead

Southern Illinois is scheduled to return home for their next match against Evansville on Saturday, where they aim to build on their recent success.
