Drake Women’s Soccer Team Falls to UIC
CHICAGO, Ill. – The Drake Bulldogs faced a setback on Saturday night, experiencing their first loss in league play with a narrow 1-0 defeat against the UIC Flames.
The game began with immediate pressure from the Bulldogs, who registered an early shot just 49 seconds in. Madelyn Smith’s attempt prompted a swift save from UIC’s goalkeeper Francesca Faraci.
Throughout the first half, Drake maintained offensive momentum, accumulating a total of eight shots but failing to convert any into goals. In contrast, UIC managed only three shots in the same period, with one on target, which was successfully defended by Drake’s Addie Ford, leading to a halftime score of 0-0.
Second Half Action
As the second half commenced, the Bulldogs continued their pursuit of a breakthrough. Claire Emmerich had a couple of promising chances but, once again, the UIC defense held strong, with goalkeeper Sara Sanabria stepping up when needed.
The decisive moment of the match came in the 72nd minute. After a yellow card was issued to Drake’s Izzy Snowden, UIC capitalized on the ensuing possession. Riley Collett initiated the play, connecting with Emmy Higgins, who deftly maneuvered the ball forward before striking from distance. Higgins’ powerful shot sailed above Ford and found its way into the net, marking the only goal of the match.
Final Minutes
With only 18 minutes remaining on the clock, Drake was determined to equalize. The Bulldogs launched a series of attacks, notably sending four shots towards the UIC goal in the final three minutes alone. Unfortunately for Drake, each attempt was thwarted, and the match concluded with a final score of 1-0 in favor of UIC.
Coach’s Remarks
Following the match, Drake’s head coach, Lindsey Horner, expressed disappointment in the outcome, stating, “We knew UIC was going to be tough to beat at home, but the most disappointing part of this loss is getting shut out after creating 18 scoring chances.” Horner noted that the team performed below its potential and attributed part of the struggle to UIC’s defensive organization, adding, “Fall break is coming at the right time, but we have to have a rebound performance this coming weekend.”
