BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – On October 10, the UNC Asheville volleyball team achieved its first Big South Conference road victory of the season, defeating Gardner-Webb with a decisive sweep (25-14, 25-18, 28-26) in the Paul Porter Arena.

This victory represents not only Asheville’s first sweep against Gardner-Webb since 2021 but also elevates their record to 6-11 overall and 3-1 in Big South play. In contrast, Gardner-Webb’s record now stands at 8-11 overall and 1-3 within the conference.

Match Highlights

The Bulldogs commenced the match vigorously, showcasing a remarkable offensive performance in the first set, hitting .368 and holding Gardner-Webb to just 14 points. The quick momentum was fueled by early contributions from Albertine van der Goot and Kylie Cackovic, who each provided key kills right out of the gate.

Maintaining their stronghold, UNC Asheville continued to exhibit a consistent offense and robust defense throughout the second set. As the frame progressed, Asheville managed a hitting percentage of .216 while restricting Gardner-Webb to a negative hitting percentage. With the score tied at 13, a pivotal attack error from the Runnin’ Bulldogs swung momentum back to Asheville. Back-to-back kills from Cackovic, along with a service ace by Izzy Perkins, played a significant role in adopting a commanding lead, allowing Asheville to claim a 2-0 lead in the match.

The third set developed into a fierce competition, with Gardner-Webb managing to force 14 ties and four lead changes, particularly in the final stages. Tied at 26, Asheville capitalized on two consecutive errors from Gardner-Webb, ultimately sealing the match with a sweep. Avery Schwieger came off the bench to deliver key serves that set up the final points for the Bulldogs.

Player Performance

Kylie Cackovic emerged as the standout performer for Asheville, recording 13 kills and 12 digs, marking her fourth double-double this season. Djurovic closely followed with nine kills and 10 digs, while van der Goot contributed six kills alongside a solo block and four block assists. The defensive efforts were bolstered by Lydia Pate, who recorded six block assists, and Alison Goldberg, who added two solo blocks and two assists. Michelle Thao led the team’s defensive line with 22 digs and four service aces, with Payton Rolfsen orchestrating the offense with 24 assists and five digs.

Statistical Overview

As a collective unit, UNC Asheville hit .210 for the match and showcased their dominance at the net with an 11-2 advantage in blocks. Additionally, the Bulldogs excelled in service aces, outpacing Gardner-Webb 8-3.
