Published on 28 July 2025
Shi Yongxin, known as the ‘CEO Monk’, faces serious allegations including embezzlement and maintaining improper relationships.
Current Allegations and Investigation
Shi Yongxin, the abbot of the esteemed Shaolin Temple, is currently under a criminal investigation. Authorities are examining charges related to the misappropriation of temple funds, as well as allegations of personal misconduct.
The temple announced via WeChat that Yongxin is “suspected of criminal offences, misappropriating and embezzling project funds and the temple’s assets,” thereby violating several Buddhist precepts.
Consequences of the Investigation
As a result of these allegations, Shi Yongxin’s ordination has been revoked. The Buddhist Association of China, an organization supporting state Buddhist activities, has publicly condemned his actions, calling them “extremely deplorable” and asserting that they have caused significant damage to the reputation of the Buddhist community.
Yongxin is also accused of engaging in inappropriate relationships with multiple individuals over a prolonged period, and it has been reported that he has fathered at least one illegitimate child.
Background on Shi Yongxin
Shi Yongxin became the abbot of the Shaolin Temple in 1999, marking his position as the 33rd Generation Shaolin Buddhist Monk. He is notably recognized for his efforts to modernize and commercialize the temple, an approach that has drawn both acclaim and criticism from various Buddhist communities.
He holds an MBA, making him the first Chinese monk to achieve such a degree. His role has included significant leadership positions, such as Chairman of the Henan Province Buddhist Association and Vice-Chairman of the Buddhist Association of China.
Historical Context
This is not the first time Shi Yongxin has faced scrutiny. In 2015, he was accused of misconduct, which he denied at the time. However, reports indicated that he was cleared of all allegations in 2016.
Recently, an online rumor claimed that Yongxin attempted to flee China with his alleged mistresses and children, but this statement has been dismissed by temple officials as unfounded.
