Dr. Rachel Brem: Pioneering Advances in Breast Imaging
Professional Background
Dr. Rachel Brem serves as a Professor and Vice Chair of Radiology at The George Washington University, while also directing the Breast Imaging and Intervention Center.
Her reputation as a leading figure in the fight against breast cancer has earned her a spot on Newsweek Magazine’s list of top cancer doctors in the U.S.,
further highlighted by noted surgeon and television personality Dr. Mehmet Oz, who praised her as a “cancer detective.”
Graduating from Columbia Medical School at the age of 24, Dr. Brem completed her residency in diagnostic radiology and further honed her specialty with a fellowship in breast imaging at The Johns Hopkins Hospital.
Rising through the ranks, she eventually became the Director of Breast Imaging there before transitioning to her current roles.
Research and Clinical Interests
Dr. Brem focuses her research on minimally invasive breast biopsy techniques and innovative technologies designed for the early detection of breast cancer.
Her significant contributions include the development of various advanced detection methods, notably:
- Computer-aided detection (CAD)
- Automated breast ultrasound systems (ABUS)
- Molecular imaging of the breast
- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Brem founded the Brem Foundation to Defeat Breast Cancer in 2004, which aims to support research, education, and improved clinical care in the realm of breast health.

Currently, Dr. Brem is an advisor for BeSound, an innovative breast imaging platform that is set to make its debut in Los Angeles in Winter 2026.
