University of Hawai’i Women’s Volleyball Team Shines with Big West Honors
HONOLULU — Following their triumphant victory at the OUTRIGGER Invitational, the University of Hawai’i women’s volleyball team has garnered three awards from the Big West Conference this week.
Acknowledgements for Stellar Performances
Key players in this recognition included:
- Cha’lei Reid – Named the Offensive Player of the Week
- Bri Gunderson – Awarded Defensive Player of the Week
- Adrianna Arquette – Clinched the Setter of the Week title
This marked the inaugural Big West honors for each athlete.
Outstanding Contributions by Cha’lei Reid
Reid made a standout impression by scoring 50 kills and serving 10 aces across three matches, earning her the title of Most Valuable Player at the OUTRIGGER Invitational. Her remarkable performance included:
- A staggering 26-kill opener against San Jose State.
- An average of 4.55 kills per set throughout the tournament.
- Six aces against St. John’s, setting a new individual program record since 2017.
Currently, she leads the Big West with 15 aces, averaging 0.68 per set, and accumulated an average of 5.68 points per set during the competition.
Bri Gunderson’s Defensive Prowess
Gunderson showcased her defensive strength, recording 18 blocks over the tournament’s course, now ranking at the top of the Big West. Highlights of her performance include:
- A season-high of 9 blocks during a match against Utah Valley, featuring two solo blocks.
- A hitting percentage of .489 and seven aces, contributing to her All-Tournament team selection.
She currently leads the conference in total blocks, boasting 30 and averaging 1.43 blocks per set.
Adrianna Arquette’s Skillful Playmaking
As the setter, Arquette excelled, averaging 10.27 assists per set and facilitating a collective .295 attack percentage for the team during their back-to-back sweeps. Key aspects of her contributions include:
- Tying her season-high with 49 assists in a competitive match against San Jose State.
- Achieving her second double-double of the season with 14 digs.
- Leading a highly effective attack that achieved a season-high hitting percentage of .330 against Utah Valley.
Currently, she ranks second in the Big West with an average of 9.36 assists per set, while also contributing six blocks and five aces during the tournament.
Looking Ahead
The Rainbow Wahine, currently holding a record of 2-4, are set to conclude their season-opening homestand with a two-match series against Portland. The matches will take place starting Thursday at Bankoh Arena, situated at the Stan Sheriff Center.
