YORK, PA – The eighth-ranked Johns Hopkins women’s basketball team maintained its unbeaten streak by overpowering York University with a decisive 59-35 win on Saturday at Wolf Gym.
First Quarter: A Slow Start
York University took an early lead, starting the game with a 7-2 run. However, the Blue Jays responded effectively. Layla Henderson ignited a 6-0 run for Hopkins, and with a late bucket from Emily Collins, the Blue Jays held an 11-9 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
Second Quarter: Strong Defense Shines
The second quarter showcased Hopkins’ defensive prowess. After York tied the game at 17-17 with 3:46 left, the Blue Jays clamped down, preventing York from scoring for the last 6:07 of the quarter. Through aggressive defense, including three steals—two by Stephanie Theodossakos and one by Macie Feldman—Hopkins capitalized with a 10-0 run, ending the half leading 27-17. Despite struggling offensively at 26.5% shooting in the first half, the Blue Jays dominated the boards with an 11-3 advantage in offensive rebounds.
Third Quarter: Maintaining Momentum
In the third quarter, the Blue Jays continued to build on their lead, not allowing York to score for the first 2:42, as Jocelyn Goldstein scored to extend the advantage to 31-17. A sharp three-pointer by Lauren Knudson followed a temporary York three-pointer interruption. The defense further isolated the Spartans, holding them scoreless for another 3:18, producing a lead of 40-20, capped by a three-pointer from Henderson. Feldman concluded the quarter with five points, bringing the score to 47-24 as they headed into the final frame.
Final Quarter: Sealing the Victory
With a comfortable lead established, the Blue Jays outscored York 12-11 in the fourth quarter, solidifying their 59-35 victory.
