In a recent social media exchange, swimmer Riley Gaines reacted to comments made by Olympic gymnast Simone Biles regarding transgender athletes competing in women’s sports. This dispute highlights ongoing tensions in the discourse concerning athletic inclusivity.
The Exchange
Gaines, a prominent advocate for maintaining women’s spaces in sports, criticized Biles after the gymnast called her “truly sick” for her comments on the inclusion of a transgender athlete in a high school girls’ softball team in Minnesota. Gaines expressed her concerns about the implications of allowing male-identified athletes to compete alongside women.
“In just two tweets, Simone Biles basically tarnished her reputation to anyone with a shred of honesty,” Gaines remarked in her podcast, “Gaines for Girls.” She asserted that it is crucial to protect opportunities specifically designated for women.
Biles’ Statement
Biles responded to Gaines by accusing her of being a “sore loser” and suggested that Gaines should promote inclusivity for transgender athletes instead of criticizing them. In her posts, Biles encouraged the creation of separate categories for transgender athletes within all sports, stating:
“You should be uplifting the trans community and perhaps finding a way to make sports inclusive OR creating a new avenue where trans feel safe in sports.”
Gaines’ Retort
In her podcast, Gaines conveyed disappointment with Biles’ stance, maintaining that it was not women’s responsibility to accommodate men in their competitions. She declared:
“Men don’t belong in women’s sports, and I say that with my full chest.”
Background Context
Gaines has gained attention as one of the leading voices opposing transgender women competing against biological women in sports. Her advocacy intensified following a controversial race against Lia Thomas, a transgender athlete, at the 2022 NCAA Division I Women’s Swimming Championships, where Gaines shared her negative experience regarding forced competition and shared facilities.
Gaines, alongside other female athletes, has initiated legal actions against the NCAA, voicing concerns over fairness and safety in women’s sports. Such discussions continue to evoke varied opinions and highlight the need for equitable arrangements within athletic environments.
A Call to Dialogue
At the conclusion of her podcast, Gaines extended an invitation to Biles for a constructive conversation on women’s sports, expressing hope for a dialogue that could lead to mutual understanding.
