Miguel Cardona Launches Cardona Solutions: A New Chapter in Educational Policy Consulting

New Ventures Post-Office

Former U.S. Secretary of Education, Miguel Cardona, is channeling his expertise into a new venture called Cardona Solutions. This private consulting firm aims to address critical areas within education policy, focusing on themes such as:

  • Academic Recovery and Excellence
  • Improving Conditions for Educators and Mental Health
  • Global Competitiveness
  • College Affordability and Accessibility

Collaborative Efforts in Education

Cardona has indicated that he is actively seeking partnerships with universities in Connecticut and Massachusetts. In a statement, he emphasized his commitment to being a resource for educational needs across various states, regardless of their political affiliations:

“I want to be available to support across the country in areas that are in great need, whether it’s Democrat states or Republican states,” said Cardona.

This flexible approach aims to ensure that all students receive the necessary support to thrive.

Legacy as Education Secretary

During his tenure as Secretary of Education, Cardona sought to navigate politically charged issues, often maintaining that he avoided engaging in ‘culture wars.’ His administration faced scrutiny for various policies, including a controversial Title IX rule change intended to broaden protections based on gender identity. This proposed change faced legal challenges and was ultimately withdrawn.

Notably, Cardona’s first collaboration in his new role is with the Connecticut Association of Schools (CAS). This partnership arises amid ongoing discussions about equity and sports competitions, particularly regarding lawsuits filed by high school athletes challenging participation policies.

Focus on Diversity and Equity

Throughout his term, Cardona prioritized initiatives centered on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), including funding programs aimed at generating a diverse educator workforce. However, he also faced criticism for endorsing the involvement of the FBI in investigating parents who protested against curricular changes related to critical race theory.

Ongoing Educational Reforms and Challenges

The Biden Administration, with Cardona’s support, made efforts to alleviate student debt, although many initiatives encountered significant pushback and legal barriers. Following the Supreme Court’s ruling against a major debt cancellation plan, Cardona expressed disagreement, stating:

“The Supreme Court got the decision wrong,” Cardona noted during a 2023 interview.

Future Aspirations with Cardona Solutions

With the establishment of Cardona Solutions, he aims to leverage his experience to foster innovation and improvement in educational systems nationwide. As Cardona embarks on this new journey, his focus remains clear: to facilitate supportive environments for educators and students alike.
