Benton County Raises Alarm on Women’s Sports Integrity
Call to Action for Local Leaders
Benton County is urging municipal and county leaders across Southeast Washington to endorse a letter addressing significant concerns regarding the participation of biological males in women’s sports. This initiative seeks to protect the competitive landscape established for female athletes.
Importance of Title IX
The letter prominently references Title IX, a crucial regulation that prohibits discrimination based on sex in federally funded educational programs. This law has been instrumental in the advancement and success of women’s sports over the past five decades, shaping a more equitable playing field.
Recent Policy Changes
Notably, both World Athletics and the NCAA have made updates to their policies regarding participation in women’s sports:
- World Athletics: On March 25, 2025, the organization reinstated chromosome testing to maintain integrity within female sports.
- NCAA: A policy clarification issued on February 6, 2025, stated that “a student-athlete assigned male at birth may not compete on a women’s team.”
Local Endorsements Anticipated
If the Richland City Council approves this proposal at its upcoming meeting on May 6, Mayor Theresa Richardson is expected to sign the letter. The initiative has garnered support from several key figures, including:
- Kennewick Mayor Gretl Crawford
- Pasco Mayor Pete Serrano
- West Richland Mayor Brent Gerry
- Benton County Chairman Jerome Delvin
- Franklin County Chairman Rocky Mullen
