Women and Girls in Science: Inspiring Future Generations
From February 1 to 5, 2021, local schools will be hosting a series of presentations led by female scientists and engineers as part of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science celebrations. This initiative aims to inspire students and encourage girls to pursue careers in scientific, technological, engineering, and mathematical (STEM) fields.
Event Overview
This annual event marks its fifth consecutive year with collaboration among CERN, the University of Geneva’s Scienscope, and EPFL. Over the course of the week, a diverse group of women will share insights about their professional journeys, daily responsibilities, and ongoing projects in science and engineering. Presentations will include engaging demonstrations that aim to captivate the student audience.
Goals and Ambitions
The primary goal of this initiative is to broaden students’ perspectives and reinforce the idea that STEM careers are equally accessible to girls as well as boys. With previous iterations of this event resulting in over 135 presentations in 2020 alone, there is a growing demand for motivated female role models willing to guide the next generation.
How to Participate
Female professionals in STEM-related fields are encouraged to volunteer for this impactful week. Interested individuals should sign up by January 6, 2021. Here are the essential details:
- Open to women in STEM, computer science, communication, or education fields.
- Presentations will last for one hour, accommodating up to 30 students aged 7 to 15.
- Most presentations will be conducted in French (approximately 95%), but English-speaking volunteers are also welcome.
Health and Safety Measures
In light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, organizers are monitoring the situation closely. A decision regarding the event’s viability will be made in January 2021. In the event of cancellations, virtual presentations will be offered to schools to ensure that students still have access to inspiring content.
Conclusion
Joining this initiative provides an invaluable opportunity to impact young minds positively. By participating as a speaker, women in STEM can help foster interest and passion for these fields among students.
