MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Memphis women’s basketball team announced the completion of its support staff for the upcoming 2025-26 season, introducing Chastadie Barrs as the new director of recruiting. This strategic hire is aimed at strengthening the program’s recruiting efforts as they move forward.
Barrs comes to Memphis from the College of Charleston, where she spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach and director of operations. Under her guidance, the Cougars achieved a remarkable record of 25 wins during the 2024-25 season, reaching both the semifinals of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) tournament and the Super 16 in the Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT). The program concluded her tenure with an impressive overall record of 47-18.
During her notable playing career at Lamar University, Barrs was highly recognized as a defensive force in college basketball. She was a four-time Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Year and set the NCAA single-season steals record with 192. Barrs led the nation in steals per game with an average of 6.2 and concluded her collegiate career with a record 648 steals, the highest in NCAA history.
Beyond her defensive prowess, Barrs made history during the 2018-19 season by setting a Lamar record with five triple-doubles, ranking her second in the NCAA for that season. She also became only the second player in NCAA history to accumulate at least 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, 500 assists, and 500 steals over her career. Her individual statistics at Lamar include:
- 6th in career points with 1,391
- 1st in career steals with 648
- 7th in career rebounds with 740
- 1st in career assists with 717
After her time at Lamar, Barrs extended her career internationally, playing in Lausanne, Switzerland, where she earned the title of Defensive Player of the Year. She later founded and led the Hoop Culture DFW AAU program, working with players from grades two through 12 alongside her mother.
Education remains a strong foundation for Barrs, who graduated magna cum laude from Lamar with a degree in corporate communications. She was recognized as a two-time First-Team Academic All-Southland Conference honoree and, in 2024, was honored as the only female inductee in the Lamar University Cardinal Hall of Honor.
