Deepika Padukone’s Departure from Spirit: A Landmark Moment for Working Mothers

June 19, 2025 – 15:45 IST

The film industry rarely engages in discussions around the needs of new mothers or the significance of work-life balance. However, recent events surrounding Deepika Padukone’s exit from the film “Spirit” directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga have catalyzed the conversation, bringing attention to often-overlooked issues.

The Circumstances of Departure

Deepika Padukone, a leading figure in Indian cinema, reportedly withdrew from “Spirit” three weeks prior due to unmet demands concerning remuneration and work conditions. Initially praised for her high earnings—estimated between ₹20 crore and ₹25 crore—the narrative shifted dramatically. Padukone’s request for an eight-hour workday did not align with the project’s expectations.

Polarized Reactions

The fallout has garnered mixed reactions; while some criticized her demands, others praised her stance as a mother. Vanga’s derogatory remarks on social media, labeling her as a “frustrated cat,” further fueled the debate. This incident has spotlighted the industry’s often dismissive attitude toward women’s demands and the challenges of balancing motherhood and a successful career.

Support from Industry Peers

Industry insiders have voiced support for Padukone’s requests. Director Kabir Khan pointed out the inequality in work routines by questioning why female actors shouldn’t have the same eight-hour workday as their male counterparts, such as Aamir Khan and Akshay Kumar. Additionally, actor Neha Dhupia emphasized the necessity for practical support for working mothers, stating, “For work-life balance to go beyond conversations, new moms need practical support and consideration.”

The Impact of Motherhood in Cinema

Traditionally, motherhood has been seen as a hindrance to female stars’ careers in a predominantly patriarchal industry. Notable figures like Sridevi and Kajol scaled back their work after becoming mothers, while others like Kiara Advani have recently opted out of projects upon approaching motherhood, thereby passing opportunities to colleagues.

Progressive Change in the Industry

Amidst this, a slow but noticeable shift is emerging. Kareena Kapoor has openly navigated her family life in the public eye, disregarding societal pressure to conceal her marriage and motherhood. Similarly, Alia Bhatt has worked actively during her pregnancy, further normalizing the intersection of career and family life.

Padukone’s Stand

While she hasn’t addressed her departure from “Spirit” directly, Padukone has indicated her commitment to balancing personal priorities with her career. In an interview with Vogue Arabia, she expressed her dedication to raising her daughter, Dua, and emphasized the importance of following her inner voice during challenging times. Following the controversy, a powerful teaser for an upcoming project showcased her determination: “The Queen marches to conquer,” the caption read.

A Broader Message

In an industry marked by intense competition, Padukone’s perseverance in advocating for her worth while juggling motherhood may represent a significant cultural shift. Rather than merely negotiating for a higher fee in a single project, her actions could potentially redefine the landscape for working mothers in cinema, championing their right to thrive both personally and professionally.
