Plattsburgh State Women’s Soccer Secures Strong SUNYAC Start
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. — The Plattsburgh State University women’s soccer team made a powerful statement in their opening match of SUNYAC (State University of New York Athletic Conference) play, defeating the Fredonia University Blue Devils 5-0. This victory marks a pivotal moment for the Cardinals as they seek to build momentum after missing the conference tournament last season.
Setting the Tone for the Season
With this match, Plattsburgh State recorded its second-highest single-game goal tally of the season. Forward Alana DeLaCruz initiated the scoring, netting two goals in the first half, allowing the Cardinals to establish a solid 2-0 lead at halftime. Team captain LaFountain, along with teammates Leah Warren and Sally Gliganic, contributed to the scoreline with a goal each in the second half.
Team’s Focus on Improvement
Reflecting on the performance, Gliganic stated, “We started off strong in the first five minutes and that just really set the tone for the whole game.” Her remarks emphasize the team’s focus on maintaining high energy throughout the match—a key area of improvement identified prior to the game.
Highlighting Personal Milestones
LaFountain, a native of Mooers Forks, New York, scored her second career goal on her home turf, creating a poignant moment for her. “It was super exciting,” she remarked. “Everyone who supported me through high school can come to my games. It’s just nice having the support and everyone here to witness these moments.”
In addition, Gliganic achieved a personal milestone by scoring her first collegiate goal, a significant accomplishment following two ankle surgeries that interrupted her previous season. “Getting my first goal was exciting, really moving the momentum forward for me and everyone else on the team,” she noted.
Defensive Strength
The Cardinals’ strong performance was further complemented by goalkeeper Desiree Dubois, a resident of Champlain, New York, who secured her second shutout in goal.
Looking Ahead
With this emphatic victory, the Cardinals aim to build on their success as they prepare for an out-of-conference matchup against St. Lawrence University. The game is set to take place on Wednesday, September 24, with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
