Athlos NYC: Elevating Women’s Track and Field
Broadway isn’t the only stage making waves in New York City. This week, Athlos is turning Times Square into an athletic spectacle as women’s long jump takes the spotlight for a one-night-only competition.
Event Overview
The action begins on Thursday with women’s long jump, featuring reigning world and Olympic champion Tara Davis-Woodhall. Her participation points to a high-caliber event designed to shine a light on women’s athletics, taking place in one of the city’s most iconic locations.
Competition Format
The following day, the event transitions to Icahn Stadium on Randall’s Island for an expanded schedule including seven events, culminating in the long jump final. Athletes such as Olympic champions Faith Kipyegon and Masai Russell will vie for a total prize purse exceeding $773,000, with winners receiving a silver crown courtesy of Tiffany & Co.
Vision for the Future
According to Davis-Woodhall, this initiative represents a path forward for elevating the prominence of track and field. “This is a roadmap to making track big again,” she remarked, emphasizing the importance of visibility for women’s sports.
Reflections on the Previous Year
This marks the second installment of the Athlos NYC event. Last year, founder Alexis Ohanian and his team managed to organize a remarkable gathering on short notice, featuring a performance by rapper Megan Thee Stallion and drawing over three million viewers. This year, Ohanian aims for advancement.
Innovative Entertainment
The Friday event promises to enhance the entertainment factor, featuring live music and engaging storytelling alongside the athletic competition. A DJ will entertain fans while athletes compete in races such as the 100m, 200m, and 400m, leading up to a showcase of Olympic talent.
Financial Opportunities for Athletes
- Prize money ranges from $60,000 for first place to $2,500 for sixth.
- Winners receive 10% of the event’s revenue.
- A bonus of $250,000 is available for breaking a world record.
Celebrity Presence
Notable athletes such as Sha’Carri Richardson and Gabby Thomas will be present, alongside a special tribute to the legendary Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, who is retiring from competition. Singer Ciara will conclude the festivities with a live performance.
Future Aspirations
Ohanian expresses confidence in the ongoing potential for Athlos, envisioning further growth leading up to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Plans may include women’s only events nationwide and globally, fostering a movement towards better opportunities and recognition for female athletes.
“There’s no finish line in this race,” Ohanian stated. “It’s about relentless improvement and execution,” underscoring the commitment to ongoing development in the realm of women’s athletics.
