Empowering Women in Sports Leadership: A Spotlight on Recent Achievements
The global sports community recently celebrated significant advancements in women’s leadership through the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF) Women Lead Sports Programme. Notably, Nomeda Neverauskaitė, Secretary General of the Lithuanian Baseball and Softball Federation, and former Australian baseball representative Narelle Gosstray both completed this transformative course held earlier this year.
About the Women Lead Sports Programme
The Women Lead Sports initiative aims to cultivate a new generation of female leaders in sports. By providing extensive leadership training in an engaging environment, the programme equips women with essential tools and confidence necessary for leadership roles within their organizations and communities.
The course emphasizes:
- Self-awareness and personal leadership style development
- Stakeholder management strategies
- Communication and negotiation skills enhancement
Insights from Participants
Neverauskaitė shared her valuable experiences, stating, “The programme helped sharpen persuasive communication skills, teaching not only how to communicate effectively but also how to do so in high-pressure or conflict-prone situations.” She emphasized that understanding the psychology of persuasion in sports could significantly impact advocacy efforts and initiatives.
Addressing her leadership journey, she remarked, “Understanding and evolving your leadership can be difficult. It’s one thing to know how you naturally lead, but it’s another to push yourself outside your comfort zone to grow in areas where you might not feel as strong.” She expressed confidence that the skills she gained would empower her to lead with authenticity and advocate for meaningful change within her federation.
In addition to her role in Lithuanian baseball, Neverauskaitė has also represented her country in international softball competitions, contributing to Lithuania’s success in the 2023 Baseball5 European Championship and notable placements in the WBSC Baseball5 World Cup editions of 2022 and 2024.
Contributions of Narelle Gosstray
Narelle Gosstray, who represented Australia in the inaugural Women’s Baseball World Cup, also praised the programme. Currently serving as a WBSC technical commissioner, she emphasized that the course heightened her awareness of her personal strengths and areas for development. Reflecting on her experience, she stated, “ASOIF built the Women Lead Sports Programme to encourage women to leverage their strengths and be game-changers for the sport they love.”
Gosstray highlighted the impactful contributions of trainer Gabriela Mueller Mendoza, noting her “enthusiasm and knowledge.” She also mentioned that the course allowed her to refine her understanding of her DISC (Dominance, Influence, Steadiness, and Conscientiousness) profile, thereby gaining insights into her personal and professional responses to stress.
The WBSC’s Commitment to Gender Equality
The WBSC sees the Women Lead Sports Programme as an essential element in its strategic goals, specifically aimed at increasing gender equality within leadership positions in the sports community. With five WBSC graduates from this initiative, including notable members from various baseball and softball organizations, the programme is paving the way for future advancements in women’s sports leadership.
This collective effort underscores the importance of enhancing leadership and fostering inclusive environments in sports globally, ensuring that women continue to gain visibility and influence in decision-making roles.
