Leadership Changes in Cougar Athletics
Washington State University announced the termination of Anne McCoy, who had served as athletic director for less than 18 months. McCoy’s dismissal came amidst significant changes in the university’s administration and athletics programs.
McCoy’s Tenure and Contributions
Before her promotion to the role of athletic director in spring 2024, McCoy had been with Washington State since 2001, operating in various capacities. She was appointed interim athletic director by former university president Kirk Schulz, who retired earlier this year, paving the way for Elizabeth Cantwell’s leadership.
In her statement regarding McCoy’s departure, President Cantwell praised the former athletic director’s efforts, stating, “Anne has provided steady leadership through one of the most complex and pivotal periods in the history of Cougar Athletics. She built a strong foundation for the program’s future grounded in integrity, academic success, and care for our student-athletes. We are deeply grateful for Anne’s decades of service and her unwavering commitment to Washington State University.

Future Steps for WSU Athletics
Jon Haarlow, who currently serves as the chief operating officer for WSU athletics, has been appointed as the interim athletic director while a search for McCoy’s permanent replacement is underway.
Context of Dismissal
The reasons for McCoy’s dismissal are not fully understood, but sources indicated to ESPN that it was not related to any cause for termination. McCoy had been instrumental in supporting the university through a tumultuous time characterized by the collapse of the Pac-12 conference and its subsequent efforts to rebuild ahead of the upcoming 2026 sports season.
Coaching Hires Under McCoy
- McCoy played a key role in hiring football coach Jimmy Rogers, who is currently in his inaugural season.
- She also hired men’s basketball coach David Riley, who is beginning his second season with the team.
As Washington State University embarks on this new chapter, the athletics department looks to build upon the foundation set during McCoy’s tenure. The search for the next athletic director will likely focus on finding a leader capable of navigating the challenges ahead while promoting the development and success of student-athletes.
