UAlbany Women’s Basketball Welcomes New Assistant Coach Michelle Holmes
The University at Albany women’s basketball program is set for a fresh chapter with the recent appointment of Assistant Coach Michelle Holmes, as announced by Head Coach Colleen Mullen.
“We are thrilled to welcome Michelle to the Great Dane family,” said Mullen. “Her experience as both a standout player and coach at American brings tremendous value to our program. As a highly accomplished post player, she will be a great asset to our frontcourt development.”
Professional Background
Holmes joins the Great Danes following a successful three-season stint at American University. During her time there, she was instrumental in the development of post players, leading to notable achievements including the success of All-Rookie Cecilia Kay and Emily Johns, who earned second-team all-conference honors.
“I’m excited to join Coach Mullen’s staff,” Holmes stated. “She and the staff have been welcoming from day one. Their genuine care for the holistic development of the players has stood out to me.” She added that Mullen has fostered a strong culture at UAlbany, contributing to the team’s success both on and off the court, and expressed enthusiasm about building on that foundation.
Contributions Beyond Coaching
In addition to her on-court responsibilities, Holmes made her mark by organizing community service events and enhancing alumni engagement. She served as a liaison for housing and academic services, ensuring players had access to vital resources that support their success.
A Glimpse into Her Playing Career
Before turning to coaching, Holmes had a distinguished collegiate career as a student-athlete at American University. She helped lead the team to its first Patriot League Championship in 2015 and received accolades including a spot on the Patriot League Third Team and the All-Tournament Team. She recorded 220 rebounds in a single season, ranking sixth all-time at American, and holds the university record for single-season field-goal percentage at .643. Her career field-goal percentage of .535 ranks third all-time, and she amassed a total of 556 career rebounds, placing her 16th in the university’s history.
Academic Credentials
A Toledo, Ohio native, Holmes graduated from American University in 2016 with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and a minor in Public Health.
