ACCS Gains Funding to Boost Women’s Sports Programs

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – In a significant development for women’s athletics, the Alabama Community College System (ACCS) has secured an allocation of $300,000 for the Fiscal Year 2025. This funding is set to enhance the college’s women’s sports programs, including basketball, softball, soccer, cross country, golf, tennis, track and field, volleyball, and an exciting new addition: flag football.

Strategic Growth for Women’s Flag Football

A substantial portion of the designated funds is aimed at launching and growing women’s flag football as an ACCC-sanctioned sport. The introduction of this sport marks a pivotal moment for female athletics within Alabama’s community colleges, allowing for greater participation and competition among athletes.

ACCC Commissioner Dean Myrick expressed gratitude towards Representative Blackshear and the state legislature, stating, “The Alabama Community College Conference is grateful to Rep. Blackshear and the state legislature for their generosity to not only flag football but to female athletics. We look forward to our continued growth in this fascinating sport as well as female athletics in general.”

Continued Development of Women’s Sports

The allocation will not only support flag football but also various other conference initiatives aimed at strengthening women’s sports across the ACCC. “While Alabama’s community colleges provide one of the state’s most effective workforce development pipelines, they are also proudly home to some of our top athletic programs,” said Rep. Blackshear. He reiterated the undeniable rise of flag football’s popularity, noting its inclusion in the Olympics and the NFL Pro Bowl.

New Opportunities for Athletic Competition

Alabama will join the ranks of eight states that will feature women’s flag football as a varsity sport, with the inaugural season scheduled to commence in September 2025. Seven community colleges, including Bishop State, Calhoun, Lurleen B. Wallace, Northwest Shoals, Shelton State, Snead State, and Wallace State Community College in Hanceville, are set to participate in this groundbreaking initiative.

Looking ahead, additional ACCS colleges are planning to launch women’s flag football teams by 2026, further expanding the opportunities for female athletes in the state.
