Kiara Abrantes Breaks Record at Tufts Sunshine Classic

MEDFORD, Mass. — The Bridgewater State University women’s outdoor track and field team showcased impressive performances at the Tufts Sunshine Classic, particularly highlighted by senior Kiara Abrantes, who set a new school record in the 400-meter dash.

Abrantes Shatters 400-Meter Dash Record

Abrantes clinched victory in the 400-meter dash with an outstanding time of 55.70 seconds, surpassing the previous school record of 55.76 seconds established by Jayci Andrews in 2016. Her performance not only marked a significant personal achievement but also places her 13th in the current Division III rankings for the event.

Outstanding Sprinting Performances

The Bears also excelled in sprint events, with freshman Grace Inacio impressively winning the 100-meter dash. Inacio finished with a personal-record time of 12.27 seconds, achieving top honors in the event. Meanwhile, senior Jailene Escalera secured a commendable fourth place with a finals time of 12.53 seconds, having previously posted 12.42 seconds in the preliminaries.

Diverse Talents in Hurdles and Jumps

In the 100-meter hurdles, graduate student Alison McDonough excelled, winning the race with a finals time of 14.39 seconds, which currently ranks her 21st in Division III. Freshman Madison Root recorded a preliminary time of 14.60 seconds and ultimately finished fifth with a time of 19.34 seconds in the final.

High Jump Achievements

Senior Serenity Sands claimed victory in the high jump with a notable leap of 5 feet, 5.25 inches (1.66m). Following her, graduate student Juliana Patrone and freshman Bella Grover both reached 4 feet, 11.5 inches (1.51m), securing the second and fifth positions, respectively.

Additional Top Performers

In the hurdles, Grover made her mark by placing third in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:10.82. Freshman Jordan Kosakowski also contributed to the Bears’ success, finishing fifth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 28.23 seconds.

Looking Ahead

The Bridgewater State Bears will look to capitalize on this momentum as they prepare to host the MASCAC Championships on Friday, April 25th. With the season in full swing, the team is eager to build upon their impressive performances.
