Young Golfer Aims for U.S. Women’s Open Qualification

Event Overview

The U.S. Women’s Open is set to return to Wisconsin for the first time since 2012, taking place at the renowned Erin Hills Golf Course from May 29 to June 1. The championship draws nearly 2,000 competitors, but only 156 will earn a spot in the prestigious event.

Meet Abigial Henrikson

Among the hopefuls is Abigial Henrikson, a talented golfer from DeForest, Wisconsin. At just 15 years old, she recently became the youngest winner of the 2024 Wisconsin State Amateur and is determined to qualify for the upcoming Open. Henrikson’s qualifier is scheduled for this Monday, providing her with a crucial opportunity to secure her place in the championship.

Preparation and Strategy

In her pursuit of qualifying, Henrikson has been closely monitoring scores from various competitions across the nation. “I have noticed a lot of the winning scores are all under par, so I think that will definitely be the goal—shoot under-par,” she stated. This awareness reflects her strategic mindset going into the competition.

Henrikson has also been proactive in her preparation. She visited the Erin Hills course two weeks prior to the qualifier, playing to familiarize herself with its challenges. “A lot of people don’t realize how good the golf courses are in the area, and it is just so cool to represent the state that way,” she remarked.

Family Support

Henrikson’s upcoming qualifier will be a family affair, as her father will serve as her caddie. The qualifiers involve a 36-hole format and are hosted at 23 sites nationwide, marking a significant step in her golfing journey.

Conclusion

As she prepares for her qualifier, Henrikson is not just aiming for personal success but also hopes to shine a spotlight on the caliber of golfers in Wisconsin. Her journey is one to watch as the U.S. Women’s Open approaches.
