Embracing Identity and Community Across Continents
In a cozy living space adorned with art and memories, Joy Machugu Zenz radiates strength and confidence, much like the wooden elephant figurine that rests on her wall. Residing in Freiburg, Germany, with sunlight pouring through delicate cream curtains, she embodies the fusion of cultures that defines her life’s journey.
A Journey of Resilience
Originally from Kenya, Zenz identifies herself as a “perfect migrant,” a phrase she articulates with a hint of humor. “I’ve spent half my life in Kenya and the other half in Europe,” she shares, highlighting her unique perspective as someone who has deeply experienced both continents.
Building Bridges
Moving to Germany at the age of 24 was both thrilling and intimidating for Zenz. Although she had studied German, mastering the language remained a hurdle. “The language was a barrier, but more than that, it was the mindset,” she reflects, emphasizing the cultural adjustments she was required to make.
The Birth of AWE
Driven by a desire to connect with other African women, Zenz launched African Women in Europe (AWE) in 2008. What originated as a personal quest quickly blossomed into a vibrant community. “Within five days of launching the website, 50 women had joined,” she recalls, a testament to the urgent need for such a platform.
A Growing Network
Today, AWE boasts nearly 10,000 members and partners with organizations such as Kenya Airways and the International Trade Centre. The platform serves as a vital resource for women facing similar challenges, fostering an environment where stories can be shared, and support can flourish.
Cultural Celebrations
Events hosted by AWE span across Europe from Madrid to Geneva, where women gather to celebrate their identities and achievements. “If we were in Italy, we ate Italian food; in Spain, we danced flamenco. It was about celebrating where we were while staying connected to who we are,” Zenz explains.
Acknowledging Achievements
The organization also honors African women excelling in various fields through an awards program, shedding light on their significant yet often unrecognized contributions. “When you’re awarded by your own people, it feels different. It’s about being seen and celebrated by the community you represent,” Zenz shares.
Empowerment Through Trade
In 2021, Zenz launched African Women in Trade (AfWITrade) to help empower African women through responsible trade practices aligned with the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). “The AfCFTA enables us to trade within Africa without exorbitant tariffs,” she emphasizes, recognizing the potential for economic growth and sustainability.
Ensuring Safe Investments
AfWITrade includes a matchmaking program that connects diaspora women with trustworthy partners back home, ensuring that their investments yield positive returns. “We vet the systems and connect women with trustworthy partners to ensure their investments are safe and impactful,” Zenz explains.
Overcoming Challenges
Despite the success, Zenz has faced numerous hurdles, from navigating bureaucratic challenges to addressing financial barriers for women entrepreneurs. “The systems aren’t always supportive,” she acknowledges, noting the operational difficulties diaspora investors often encounter.
A Vision for the Future
Through her work, Zenz is dedicated to shifting the narrative surrounding Africa and embracing its strength. “I’m fighting this narrative of Africa as poor. We’re proving that African women are financially stable, capable, and driving change,” she asserts.
A Call to Action
Zenz emphasizes the importance of investing not just money, but also ideas and opportunities in African communities: “This is our time. We have the tools, the networks, and the ambition. Now we need to act.” Her commitment to empowering women continues to inspire and uplift, proving that together, change is possible.
