The Transformation of Prize Money in the US Women’s Open
A Remarkable Increase in Financial Rewards
The US Women’s Open exemplifies the rapid evolution of women’s golf, particularly in terms of prize money. In just four years, the tournament’s overall purse has expanded dramatically—from $5.5 million in 2021 to an impressive $12 million in 2024.
Recent History and Growing Purses
In 2021, Yuka Saso won the tournament, earning a $1 million payout from the $5.5 million purse. The following year, the total prize money rose to $10 million, allowing Minjee Lee to take home $1.8 million as the winner.
By 2023, the purse had increased to $11 million, and Allisen Corpuz garnered a substantial $2 million for her victory. This year’s tournament continues this upward trajectory with a record-setting $12 million purse, again awarding the winner $2.4 million.
The Impact of Prize Money on Participation
USGA CEO Mike Whan emphasized the significance of these financial accomplishments, stating: “If you think about firsts, we like to kind of bring firsts. First to get to a $3 million purse, $5 million purse, $10 million purse, $12 million purse.” This year, the USGA has ensured that financial rewards are accessible not only to the finalists but also to those who do not make the cut, with a guaranteed $10,000 for missing players.
Comparative Analysis with Men’s Golf
While the financial rewards for the US Women’s Open still fall short of the men’s US Open, which offered a $21.5 million purse in 2024, it is notable that this year’s purse matches that of the men’s tournament held back in 2018. Additionally, the winner’s payout exceeds that of Brooks Koepka’s 2018 title by $240,000.
The current prize pool also outstrips the $8 million offered at the Chevron Championship, highlighting the increasing financial support for women’s professional golf.
